2016 Viognier, Alexander Valley
Floral, Fruity, Buttery and Creamy. A big round barrel fermented white
This BIG viognier is creamy and round with a lovely fruity and floral side. The Barrel fermentation and aging on the lees really brings out the oily rich characteristics in this white wine for red wine drinkers.
floral, fruity, buttery and creamy, this big Viognier is oily and rich in consistency. the nose brings pear, apricot blossoms, buttery popcorn and toasty seasoned oak. Creamy and viscous, it has a mouth coating quality that glides all the way down the throat leaving a smooth velvety feeling and lovely after aromas.
The 2016 budbreak was right on time, after several years of early onset; bloom occurred mid-May to early June. Summer brought consistent, moderate weather for optimal development of flavors across all varieties. Our precision timing in the vineyard became crucial during harvest, when we experienced a heat spike in late august. We hurried to bring in Chardonnay and viognier, then enjoyed a few days rest as temperatures cooled off. Our Viognier from 2016 is of exceptionally high quality, the wine shows depth, complexity and soft acidity.
Picked during the cool of the night, we went straight to press, lightly extracting juice from the delicate berries. the juice was chilled to settle out sediment for several days before racking to barrel and fermenting the beautiful clear juice in some of the finest new French oak barrels. the fermentation was slow and smooth yielding a very soft wine with delicate features. we aged the wine for an additional 8 months on the lees to promote the creamy features that stand forward in this wonderful Viognier.
